How to brighten or faux paint a white brick fireplace?

Hello fellow DIYers! This is my first post and I turned here because all my searches on Pinterest and Google have turned up nothing. I have a charming 110 year old farmhouse that has a brick fireplace in one of the more recent additions. It is an UGLY dirty white color and I know that painting is not a good option for older brick so I was trying to find a technique for perhaps staining, or somehow distressing it to look more rustic, perhaps an aged gray color? Any suggestions?

You're right, painting brick, especially around a fireplace, is not a good idea.
Staining is a better one.

If you post a pic of it, you may get more specific suggestions.

It is already painted, so just use paint and paint techniques.
