Float first before working on shower walls?

I'm having a hot mop pan installed. I'd rather not step directly on the hot mop surface for fear of damaging the waterproofing. I'm thinking about floating the mud over the hot mop, and then before tiling using that surface to stand on while I work on the shower walls. I assume that surface will be rock solid.
I did not work the walls because I've been told I cannot install the panels overlapping the hot mop vertical surface (the panels will bend). I want to see the finished pan and see for myself.
