fireplace updating

My wife and I recently puurchased a home with a terribly off centered 50's fireplace. I amd looking for some ideas on how to go about updatinng the fiireplace. 8i am ffairly sure i will be unable to remove the old brick as i believe this is part of the stcture of the chimney. My trouuble is that therre are four separate "vents" as ii will call them which i am sure i cant cover or can i? It is a wood burning fireplace so i am not sure if these vents are part of heat circulation. Or what their use is for. My expertise is frrsminng and finish work so i am at a loss here any ideas and help welcome thanks

Since you chose to not even post any pictures, not sure how you expect any one to be of much help here.
It would be best to find someone local to check it out. Anyone here is going to be guessing on how to make it look the way you want it to.
