Fireplace Mantel Move

Fireplace Mantel Move-image-1986502846.jpg

So I'm looking at mounting that TV on this fire place. To do so I need to move the mantel down. My concern is this is a gas fire place and I don't want he mantel to be too close to the flame. The mantel piece is solid wood, so I don't think the wood could get to a critical temperature, but honestly I don't know. The wood would be about 6" to 8" from the edge of the fireplace. On a side note will the motar hold a Tv? I know brick is the best solution, but I can patch the mortar when I leave.

Fireplace Mantel Move

You will need to check your local code, but I can almost guarantee that it will require 12"-16".

Fireplace Mantel Move

I've removed the mantle and I'm amazed at how hot the tv is getting. The tv is 14” from the fireplace. Is there a shield or deflector that can block some of this heat? I know the obvious answer is remount the mantle, but that puts the tv uncomfortably high for viewing.

Any suggestions? Thanks
