Fill concrete wall before tiling

Hi guys,

Removing tile from a dated bathroom. Behind the tile it looks like 2 "layers" of concrete. Any suggestions on what to use and how to fill the void. I obviously need to get it all flush for the new tile. Thanks so much for all your help!

That old cement scratch coat is to far gone to save.

You need to remove the mesh and cement back to the studs and furr the wall out so you can install modern Durrock or other cement board.---Consider waterproofing the surface of the new board with a paint on membrane like Redguard or Hydroban.

Follow Mike's advice. It will actually take you about as much time to demo and fur that out as it would to try and patch it. And you will end up with a better result.

You really appreciate it when you start tiling. Quickest way to find out something is not flat is to try and put tile on it.
