Question

Expanding a concrete driveway

I need to widen my concrete driveway approx. 3' more at the entrance on both sides. I have dug out the sod and topsoil and now I'm down to chunks of rocks and can't dig any deeper by hand. I only have a total of 6" in depth and I keep reading that the concrete needs to be 6" deep. I already brought in crusher stone and put it in about 2". I'm concerned that if I pour the slabs 4" thick that they will crack when we drive on it. Any suggestions??

Compact the stone you added and pour your drive at 4 inches, and it will be fine.

... And make sure to wait at least a week (preferably two weeks) before you drive on it. Concrete will achieve about 80-90% of its strength in 7 days, but takes 28 to be fully cured.

remember to use mesh or rebar, and to support them with those little concrete blocks so the mesh/rebar sits in the middle of the concrete.

Also, dunno how long your driveway is, but you may need to add stress cuts

I'll be pouring the concrete today....thanks for all the advice. I do plan on using rebar with mesh. 2x4's on the side with dirt to hold the form and 1/4 luan for an expansion joint. I'll let you know how it goes...

The driveway expansion turned out super! We used 30 bags of concrete, mixed two at a time. I used a broom to put the texture in it. The kids got to put in their handprints and initials. Yesterday I filled in a little sod on the edges, all the neighbors think we did a great job.
Thanks again for all the advice....Yeah DIY!!
