Edge restraint or cement for pavers

I'm planning a paver patio. I see mostly the plastic edge restraints being used but a few times I saw cement used along the edge. Is there a difference or preference in the two ways of securing the pavers. My patio will be aprox 20x17 butted up to house on 2 sides.

Most professionals use an edging (plastic, steel or aluminum) instead of concrete units or just concrete.

The reason is that the edging can be spiked in place and used a elevation guide for setting the final base grade and shape. Usually, the base is put in to about the right grade and the edging is spiked in for stability and the final base desired grades are established by measuring and screeding the base from the edging. The setting bed must be a uniform 1" uncompacted sand base, so the base slope determines the final slope of the pavers.

On larger jobs like roads and parking lots, the base elevations are set shot using a laser level. Then, the pavers are set on the sand setting bed, the perimeter marked on the pavers and a gas powered saw is used to cut the outer shape of the paving area and then the edging is installed up to the pavers and the hand application of sand and final vibration for filling the joints, evening out the surface is done to the grade of the flexible edging to maintain drainage. where I previously worked, they used the same method on a 3 acre parking lot/semi truck turn-around that did not have one straight line on the edges. Paver setting, including sand setting bed edging and was done with 3 paver setters and some labor for supplying them with pavers. - Plus a guy and rod man to establish the final grades plus some labor for the plate vibrator and final sweeping.

Obviously, you will not need the cutting after setting unless you have a very strange shape.
