crack in foundation!!

hi all
new to the site my first post please bare with me.

i live in a row house in philly i have the end house, love the property lots of yard for the city.
came home from work yesterday and was walking around my lawn and right at the corner of my chimney and my where it meets the house there is a crack in the seam. and it runs down in the ground and there was a perfict hole in the grass right at the house's foundation. so i went into my washroom in the basement and sure enough i found the crack and some water is coming in, we have had alot of rain lately. so i know i have to dig out that part of the lawn to dig down far enough to get to the bottom of the foundation to repair the crack. so my ? is what is the best way to seal the crack? a tar product? a concrete product? please help first time home owner.
