Bricking up a fireplace

Hi
I have removed a gas fire and I was wondering the best way to close the hole up. Not thet good with DIY. Would rather use plasterboard than bricks.
Do I need a vent in it ?
Thanks.

Yes you do need a vent, and also at the top or you may get dampness in the chimney breast.

Cap the top of the chimney to eliminate any possibility of water damage. This will eliminate the need for any vent.

If dagutter is in the UK, which he probably is as he said plasterboard, the chimney needs to be vented with an air brick at the bottom and a terminal like this at the top.
