brick chimney

mine has a clean out trap door, in the basement. i took the door off and it was full of dirt. i took a screwdriver and started digging it out. it seems this chimney is quite full. did they fill these back in the day ? or just decades of buildup ?

That is where the ashes fall to. Clean it out and use it.

brick chimney

as far as i know, and can tell. it has never been used for a fire place. though i am sure they had an oil burning furnace in here years ago.

i am figuring that all this dirt/junk was blown in there over the decades. probably because of bad chimney caps over the years.
