Breaking out concrete to repair old shower drain pipes?
My old shower drainpipe is coming out of the slab crooked. In the old shower the drain assembly had been put on the pipe crooked and sealed with oakum to make it flush with the old shower floor.
I'm thinking about breaking out the concrete around the drain so I can replace the trap and make the pipe come up straight. I have a sledge hammer, but am concerned that the pipes might be damaged if I break the concrete that way. Is this true? I have a hammer drill, is there any way I could use that instead? |

Breaking out concrete to repair old shower drain pipes?
Your best bet is to rent a chipping hammer or a jack hammer----the best advice? Open it up enough to replace the P-trap----
There were two threads on that in the last week----

Breaking out concrete to repair old shower drain pipes?
Yes I will break it out enough to work on the P trap, and maybe to cut the pipe behind the p trap. I hope to join it to plastic with nohub. Then move the trap around to center the pipe coming up. Pipe position might become an issue depending on which shower pan method I decide on.
Also I plan to set the new pipes in gravel, and then put concrete the last 2 inches. Good plan? I've looked briefly for those other threads. Can't find them... |

Breaking out concrete to repair old shower drain pipes?
Oh'mike, thanks a lot for the advice on getting a chipping hammer. There was not only concrete on top, but concrete wrapped around the pipe itself! Would have taken forever without the demolition hammer. The pipe looks okay, hope it wasn't damaged.
