Blend mortar colors (w/ Sakrete mortar repair caulk)

Hi,

My wife and I recently moved into our first home and there were a lot of cracks (or missing chunks) of mortar on our front steps.

I went to home depot to get tips on how to repair, and they recommended I use this stuff:
http://www.sakrete.com/products/deta...ar-Repair-Tube

I followed the instructions and the end result looks like the attached image. The repaired sections are a bright ice gray with a smooth finish, and the older mortar looks weathered and rough. Not great. :'(

Newbie questions:
1. Is there any way to blend these areas together? Maybe get some paint and go over all the mortar lines?
2. What is the easiest way to "fix" this?
3. The directions for the mortar product I used said to ensure the temp is over 50' for a few days. Do most mortar repairs need to be done in warmer seasons? (I'm on the east coast and it's unlikely we'll have many more 50+ degree weather till April - just live with it till then?)

Thanks in advance,
Eric

A lot of masons struggle to match mortar, so it's even harder DIY. Maybe leave till spring to weather in a bit and see how it looks then.

Rub dirt on it.

That's funny - I didn't even think about that option (i.e. rub dirt on the new mortar)

I'll give that a try.

I'm wondering if either of you have heard of this stuff: http://instantmortarmatch.com ?

I found it while googling for solutions. Thoughts (if dirting it up doesn't help)
