Anyone install their own Egress?

Thinking about getting some engineering plans made up to add a full sized door egress out from our basement. Has anyone ever done this before? What parts are DIY-able?

Once the trench is dug and the retaining wall/stairs are formed/poured and the steel lintel is installed.. installing a door becomes basic carpentering

I had a handicap ramp cut into an existing basement---it is all fairly advanced concrete work and excavating----the only thing I was able to do was open the finished basement wall--then wait till they finished--so I could add the entrance door and restore the basement finish work.

I was thinking about renting an excavator myself and digging the trench. I'd have a concrete company pour the footers, wall and cut the hole. TBD, I guess.

First step is call your local Miss Utility number to find out if anything is buried anywhere near where you want to dig. You DO NOT want surprises. Gas, water, sewer, phone, electric, etc. This is true whether you dig, or have someone else do it. The service is often free.

As for DIY, I suppose it depends on how deep you need to go, and what kind of soil conditions are present. For a 4 foot well it might be a DIY task, but any deeper and it gets a lot riskier. You don't want to have the backhoe tip over, or the soil to collapse under it. That and the condition of the foundation needs to be considered.

What's your plan for all that excavated dirt? When I carved out a portion of our yard for a hot tub patio I neglected to plan for the volume of dirt that was in there. It was rough paying the landfill to throw DIRT away. Then I found a couple of local construction sites that would let me dump it as clean fill. So be sure you've got a place for the dirt before you start digging.

All good points.

1. The house is new construction and was built in 2010. The foundation is solid poured concrete.

2. The excavation would depend upon the drawings from an engineer and code requirements for footer depth. I have a good amount of land and can easily find a place for all that dirt.

Not really a great DIY job.
You do know it's possible to buy premade stair wells right?
Far less chance of them leaking if there all one piece.
