Adding brick to fireplace front

I am working on refacing my fireplace (shown in picture). I removed the tile, and now the front is concrete block. You can see that it has a recessed area at the front with no support underneath of 1.5" deep, 6" high and ~4' wide. I would like to know if I could fill the area with concrete bricks (1.25" deep, 3.5" wide, 6" tall) to make the top/front flush around the fireplace insert. If I built a 2x4 support underneath them to hold them in place while curing, is there a product that could be used to permanently mortar/cement/hold them in place (even after removing the support)?
After adding the brick, I'm going to reface the entire front with new tile, so that's the reason for trying to fill in the recess (I want a flush look).

Thanks!

If I understand your question, you need a lintel to permanently hold the filler you would use to make the surface flush.

looks like your wife left a hammer & chisel it shouldn't be a problem for her to knock out tile & lay brick on a floor level mortar bed while you watch the game happy to help

woody & i see this differently so i probably don't understand the goal,,, IF its to have a flush front upon which to re-tile, why not do as above,,, 2 brick courses won't add much weight

I would probably thinset 2 layers of concrete backer board over the fireplace opening. If you use a good thinset, it should stick w/o any props. You could also pre-drill a few Tapcons into it as well to help hold it in place w/o sliding down......
