window screens

This is my first post to this forum.

We are in the process of buying a house, and will be moving into it in a few weeks. We noticed that the windows do not have any insect screens, and we love to open the windows at night... The house was built in the 80's and most windows can be opened by sliding half of it up and down. Where we now live (a rental) the screens have a metal frame, which we don't really like, so I think we want wooden frames, also since they can be painted in our favorite color(s).

So are these easy to make yourself? I don't have much carpentry experience, but I can hold a saw and a hammer. If not, where can I buy these?

You can always paint aluminum, and they have screen kits at the apron store, very easy to build, then paint and insert screen.

Ok newbie, Try searching Home Depot, they all wear aprons there.

Just a few words of caution. The screens may need to be different depending on the window design. There are also various different clips to keep them in place. Some can be installed without clips. Where we live, there are a number of companies who custom make screens. Sometimes they may cost no more than buying the materials and doing it yourself. Of course if you buy them, you do not get the 'I built it' bragging rights!

I recommend: Do some research, then try building one screen to test your ability. You do not need much in tools, but the first one will require some patience.

Definitely measure each and every window. I have 30+ windows in my house and no two are really the same. I found these awesome brass screen numbers. You can tack them on the windows and screens to easily identify them.
