What window size do I need?

This is what I'm working with. The rough stud opening in 26x36. Would a window labeled 24x36 fit in there fine?

First off your rough opening would be 36x26.

You always call off the horizontal number first when ordering windows so a 24x36 slider will not work.

For that RO you would want 35 1/2" x 25 1/2" (net frame) window. Although a 24" would fit in the hole you have to take into account how the smaller window will affect the finish/trim (inside and out)

Thanks. The main reason for wanting a 36x24 is that the size is very common around here and I wouldn't have to order it (savings).

Could I get away with shaving off 1/4" on each side to make it 35.5" wide?

If you check I'll bet the 36x24 your looking at is actually 1/2" smaller in each direction.

People are under the impression that ordering a window to fit is somehow "custom" and cost more which is not the case most of the time.

when we order our windows we tell the sales man to hold the numbers...so in other words...if we want 24x 36 hold....we get exactly 24x 36
