Weather strip gets wet
9 Attachment(s)
I installed a couple of pre hung doors earlier this summer, and after some recent storms with some heavy rain I figured I would check them both to make sure they are waterproof. On one of the doors, the weather strips that runs vertical from top to bottom between the door and frame was wet at the very bottom. The only reason I noticed was when I pulled the strip out of the track, and by squeezing the bottom a few drops came out of the sponge like material inside the strip. I have all the seams on the bottom caulked, so no water is leaking in, and the water from the strip just dripped down on the sill and ran off from there as it should. So, is this a normal feature and a cause of the driving rain we've had lately, or is it something that's not right?

Looking forward to hear what you guys think, thanks!

Driving rain can cause that.

If your door is exposed like that it really should be protected with a storm door.

Most hinged doors would not pass a hose test, especially at the threshold.

I'm actually surprised that door would be that exposed to driving rain, but we've had some strange storms lately. I think I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens when it rains again. As long as this can happen in heavy rain, I'm pretty confident the installation is OK at least.
