Top window sash dropping

Hi,

I am new to this board so not sure how to navigate around. Anyway, I have a 100 year old double hung window that is not in good shape. The top window drops down about 6". I need to get this secured before winter--it's getting cold. The lock is broken so it doesn't keep the window closed. I have tried shims and it still drops.

Any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of for a temporary fix would be to lift the window up, drill in screws onto the sides into the frame leaving out a bit of the screw to hold it up. Would that work or will I just ruin the frame of the window. The total wooden window is probably 30" wide by 72" long and it quite heavy.

Are you looking for something permanent or temp?

A stick (say 1x2 or whatever) cut to length to hold it up works, also prevents break ins - unless they break the glass.

Do you mean two sticks on either side on top of the bottom sash to wedge to the top edge of the window? If so, I tried that before and they buckle from the weight and fall off.

I need something for about 6 months till I can get it professionally replaced or fixed. It's a large stairway window, so I am not concerned about breakin--it's far off the ground.

The top 1/2 of the wdw slides down?

Cut a 2x2 or even a 2x4 that fits under it and sits on the sill.
Or if it only 6 months and no plans to open screw it shut.

Yes, I was debating the same thing...maybe I should just screw the thing shut. Or, I could try propping the pieces of wood on this sill. Thanks for your input!

If it is 100yrs old, I'm sure that you have the old rope and pulley balance system. It could be fixed/replaced, but probably not worth the effort. The easiest fix would be to just go to Home Depot and buy a new sash lock for a few bucks. The push it up and lock it shut. It will look a lot better than wood blocks, etc.

Such a simple fix...I feel so foolish that I never thought of that! And, yes, they are ropes and pullies. Thanks!
