Swapping interior doors

I recently renovated a dining room. Room had a door that I removed and a closet. Doors are the same dimensions. Saved the solid door and want To hang it in the closet door frame. Only problem is the hinges in the frame don't match where the hinges on the door are. Any help would be appreciated. The solid door is nicely and stained and it would save me 100 bucks. Thanks.

Swapping interior doors

I replaced the cheap hollow core doors in my house a few years ago with solid core six panel oak doors. I simply took the old door and stood it on its side next to the new one with the hinge side up. Then I used a pencil and marked the hinge locations so they would be in the exact same spot. I ended up buying a HingeMate for use with a router, as my chisel skill leaves much to be desired and I had seven doors to do.

Swapping interior doors

How far off are they?
We know the doors are stained, what about the jambs?
Very common here to paint jambs and stain the door.

If painted jambs, I would relocate the jamb hinges because easier to patch and paint.
If jambs are stained, I would relocate the hinges on the door and maybe not even bother to patch, just stain.
You did say inside of closet, you may see the jambs when you open the door, nobody ever see or look at the hinges on back of door, will be fine.

The ideal reveal is 1/8", if you measure down from top of the jamb to the top of the top hinge, then add 1/8" to measurement for reveal, this will give you location for top hinge.
Screw door 1/2 of hinge at this location, do not chisel it out yet, just put 2 screws in it to hold it.
Now hang the door on the top hinge by putting the pin back in.
This gives you the location for the other hinge.
Screw that hinge in place to the door.
Now remove the pins and pull the door. Use your razor knife and scribe around the hinges on the door.
Pull the hinges and use your router or chisel to mortise in the hinge, re install the hinge in new location and holy crap it works
May also need to relocate the striker plate on door jamb, you would do that on the jamb and not move the door handle.
