Surface mounting solar screens

I need to add some solar screens to windows that do not have a channel all the way around them. My only option here is to surface mount them, however I've seen it done two ways:

1. Drill holes in screen frame and mount directly to window frame.
2. Install screen clips on window frame, use screen clips to hold screen in place.

Which option is "better", in your opinion? Does drilling holes in the window frame not present any problems with leakage?
