Fix'n it

how does a guy properly line up a striker plate ? every time i try, it doesn't go well. though i end up getting it done, the end result is not the greatest.

Several layers of masking tape and close the door,the indentations will show to mark the plate. Do screws first, drill holes, remove tape and mount plate, mark with pencil and remove, recess plate.

Even more fun, when the holes are already pre-drilled in the door frame.

Is this a door frame your trying to make or is it a prehung that's just a little off?
For one I'm making I just close the door until the latch just touches the jamb and mark the top and bottom.

Fix'n it

it is repairs to a damaged jamb. i shut the door with the latch out, then mark the heights. but the problem comes when setting the striker to hold the door tightly closed. is either to tight, or to loose.

i think next time i am going to put tape on the jamb. then a little paint on the latch. push door fully closed and release the knob. this will mark the tape.

Maintenance 6

I always use a footrule with the slide extension. (The slide that is used for measuring inside dimensions) I mark the the jamb for the latch height, then close the door and extend the slide against the latchbolt (between the door and jamb). Then slide the wooden part of the rule against the edge of the jamb. Pinch the slide tight so it doesn't move and open the door. Now place the wooden end of the rule against the jamb and mark a line at the end of the slide on the jamb where the latchbolt fell.

If it is too loose some strikers have a slot on the tang that goes into the hole you drilled, take a screwdriver and put in the slot and bend the tang just a little at a time until the door is tight.
