Storm Door Install

I need some thoughts or ideas for installing a storm door on our door leading to the garage. Right now we have a solid metal door that opens inward but we want to be able to see into the garage when the garage door is open as we dont want someone thinking they can take our stuff. The problem is the frame is 31x 80 and every door I find is 32x80 or 30x80. I was wanting to install it inside the door frame like our front door one is- guess that one was a normal size frame, but due to the extra inch or lack of a inch that obviously wont work. I am then wondering if the easy close spring will even fit in the space between the 2. What should I do?

Here is the one I was looking at :

Measure the width of the door slab. It is probably either 30" or 32" (or within a 1/4" of one or the other), and that is what you will base the storm door size on.
If by some crazy chance you actually have a 31" door, you can just build the exterior trim out to use the other size. I'd probably build it out and use the 32" rather than shrink the opening by building in.

Here is a pic........ I really did not want to remove the door trim and build out from the door but that may be the only option

It looks like from jamb to jamb you get a measurement of 31" which is normal. If you measure the door itself it should measure 30".
If this is the case you need the 30" storm door.

Pw,
the storm doors are made to mount on the inside edge of the brick mold, not the door jamb. If you measured between the stop moldings and got 31", you should have a 32" door.

Last 2 posts contradict a little bit, lol... As I stated earlier don't worry about any frame measurements. What is the exact measurement of the width of the slab? No picture necessary for that answer

Storm Door Install

Well I found out last night the reason for the odd size. When the house was rebuild due to a fire, I remember they hung a standard wood door to the garage. We requested a metal fire door which is what saved the rest of the house, anyways they rehung a metal door and instead of changing the whole frame, they built the inside with flat moulding to hold the weatherstrip piece . Not the way it should have been done. So I will need a 32 inch door and will have to remove the molding on the garage side and replace it with a flat trim.

Thanks for the help!! If any of you are wondering how great a fire rated metal door is, take a look at this pic, I am glad we had one.

Can't comment on the specifics of what to remove etc, but it sounds liek you have it under control at this point. Problem solved

Since the door frame is 31x80 I suggest you buy a 30x80 door that would perfectly fit the frame. I do agree with you that the door sizes are standard of 30x80, 32x80 and 36x80. I hope my suggestion works fine for you.
