Storm Door Handles

The handles on my storm door were originally high polish brass (plating?) and got so scratched up over time, I wanted to make them presentable again. My intention that because I knew I could not duplicate the original finish, that I would paint them black with Rustoleum.
However, when I cleaned them up, I liked the satiny look they now had and thought twice about painting. What I don't know, though, is will the cleaned-up handles and their cover plates be adversely affected by weather, or should I put a poly or clear lacquer over them?

I suspect the lacquers will be a temp fix but if you like the brass look, stay with that.
