Replacing windows from the 60s
I live in Los Angeles and just purchased a condo there.
The windows are old aluminum ones that I believe are original to the building.
I think I would like the replace them, but according to my home owners, I have to maintain the look of exterior of the building with my windows.
I believe the windows and sliding glass doors are standard sizes, but haven't measured yet.
Is this a project worth taking on or should I just leave them? is it possible to keep the aluminum look in this day and age?
What would be a good window company.
any advice is appreciated.
Thanks to all.
In a location with as little temperature variance as LA, and where you really don't have either heating or cooling, windows are mostly decorative and you don't need to worry about R or U values. Put your money into something else real.
still think its not worth it?
Without a picture of the inside and outside of the windows not sure we would know.
LA gets hot in the summer for about 3 months a year. My sister is out in LA and she redid all her windows and doors, the place is much more comfortable now.
If your from Texas you wont care, but i think it will depend on where your from and what your used to. Being a roofer, hot to me is 75+ lol, i much prefer the 60's to mid 70's lol. I would think LA in the summer is 85-95 for the most part...we get our triple digit days but probably not more than a few weeks a year at most.
Probably depends on what part of LA your talking about also. LA beachs or more like down town makes a big diff.
It would probably be worth it to change out your windows to something more efficient.
SHGC is important as is the U factor of the windows etc.
You will have to check your CC&Rs to find out what you are allowed to replace the aluminum crap with, probably vinyl would be O.K. but you have to find out first.
It has been mid to high 90s here for the week and will continue to be so for the week according to local forecasts.
