Replacement Vinyl Window Brand?

About a year ago I was looking into doing some replacement windows, looking primarily at the Milgard Style Line windows. A rep for an online dealer worked up a quote for me for 16 windows, totaling about 165 sq ft, for about $2700, not including shipping. Maybe 3 picture windows, the rest sliders. Anyway, other projects took priority and this one had to be back-burnered, and I'm just now getting back to it.

However, I have since read that Milgard is no longer servicing the East Coast (I'm in Maryland). For a similar bang for my buck as the Milgard line I was looking at, what brand/model would you experts suggest looking at for a DIYer? Thanks in advance.

16 windows for $2,700....wow.

What were the options in them...if any.

Pretty basic. SunCoatMAX, 3D MAX, argon. Block frames, no grids.

Obviously that number is a year old, so I'd expect it to be more nowadays.

Yeah. That number is low, low, low.

Do you have a contractor's license? What kind of window did you need (frame material)?

No contractor's license. Was looking at vinyl frames, as per thread title (unless you're referring to something else that I'm ignorant of), for cost reasons.

Is cost the number one driving factor?

I would say so, with the caveat that I do want increased performance over my current decades-old aluminum-framed windows. I mean, if low-cost windows aren't going to provide that, then there's no point in doing them.

Check Out the Prism windows by Simonton, they win the JD power awards just about every year and I have never had a problem with them.

Simonton is a good window and certainly a viable choice.

Not sure I would rationalize that based on the JD Power award though. Doesn't actually translate into a good accounting for long term quality and its ratings are based in large part on the contractor's feedback on the window and the initial feedback on the window.

Windows on Wash,

I knew I would take some s*@t for bringing up the award.

The point of bringing up the JD Power award, is they have won that award 7 out of the last 8 years. Contractors keep voting year after year for the same manufacturer, means the contractors are not having to go back and service this brand compared to some others. Plus huesmann can go look up why they win the award if he wants.

chb,

You aren't taking sh*t as I wasn't throwing any. The award is fine, however, it is not a great long term evaluator for windows. The fact that they are reviewed by contractors favorably means that they deliver the product as ordered and in the timeline as promised. Thumbs up.

JD Power is a good initial quality evaluation tool. By those same metrics of evaluation, so would MI or Silverline. After the fact...not so much.

Simonton is also great about getting warranty parts on a super quick turn around so it allow the contractor to close out the project quickly and on time. Another plus.

It is a solid window all around but basing a window replacement choice on that award alone is probably ill advised.

Lets also not forget that the award is paid for. JD sells the data to the companies that choose to buy it for their "internal" uses so it is an advertiser sponsored company.

So that brings up another question. Is there an advantage in sourcing DIY windows from a local dealer vs. an online dealer? Is pricing usually better online?

Win on wash,

No big deal, I understand what you're saying. I have a strong back though so go ahead and shovel.

Have a good day, talk to you later.

It is always nice to have a local guy to talk to should you encounter problems, however there is nothing wrong with sourcing them online. Price will vary by dealer, so online vs local could be either-or.
I'd have to agree with WoW on Simonton. Nice window, solid company, very easily obtainable, just not an upper echelon performer. Rather than looking gimmicks or sales tools like the various awards, etc, I recommend reviewing the objective, independently tested performance ratings. The thermal and structural ratings will tell you how the window will ACTUALLY perform, as well as give a very strong indication as to the overall design and build quality.
If WoW serves your area you might want to give him a shout. He sells some of the best performing products that you'll find.
