Protecting windows from wind etc

I live in Philly and they are calling for 65mph winds. We have 2 bay windows on the ground floor, other than plywood what can I do to protect them from the wind? Would it be a good idea to crisscross 1x3's?

It is not the wind that is dangerous, it is stuff like flying debris, or branches. Most just place plywood over the windows. Here in the Midwest and those out west can get 65mph straight line or brief wind bursts, and we just let it be.

Problem is no way to transport the plywood back home, I just have an Accord.

Would the crisscross cut down on the wind pressure though?

You rent a truck or have it cut to size at your local Ace Hardware, Lowe's, Home Depot. No, crisscross will not cut down on anything. Really, unless you have seen wide spread damage in your area from winds, you are really wasting effort for nothing.

We have had winds up to 100 MPH and gust to 60 all the time and never had a window blow out yet.

We're on a corner house so we get all the wind. The windows are 58x72.

Have you ever had a problem with windows blowing out, or getting smashed by stuff in the past? If not, just let it be. If it happens, you cover them with plastic and call your Homeowners Insurance to cover the damages.

Gotcha...

Never had problems before but Never had winds in the city that high!

Around here, we get power lines going down due to falling branches, more than broken windows. Windows break like I stated before, from flying debris. As for the high winds, 50-60mph is what we see on a bad Winter night, or during a event during warmer weather.

yes not uncommon here either, is nothing special to do except make sure your stuff is secured in the yard and not end up in the neighbours.
What I hear is will be lots of rain, they predicting water levels will raise 4' and then be 20' waves on top of that.
If it is true, that is where some damage will come from, what makes this storm such a topic.

I would not worry about those wind speeds they predict.

When "boarding up" windows, the plywood must not touch the glass. There should be a space that is big enough that the plywood does not touch the glass even if you lean on or press on the plywood panel or punch it with your fist.

You can first put strips such as 1x3s around the edges for use a spacers.
