Proper front door opening?

I've heard that the proper way for the front door to open is "outwards" towards the street, is this true?

Because I never see this done and wondered why, my door doesn't open this way and no house in our neighborhood does. It does make sense that someone could/would have more trouble kicking it in since it opens outward.

Comments?

If it's the proper way, that would mean just about everyone is doing it wrong. I doubt that's the case. More likely you were either misinformed or you misinterpreted what you heard/read. It's possible that commercial buildings have different guidelines. For example, in an emergency (think fire), you certainly wouldn't want a hysterical crowd jammed up against a door that opens inward and thus can't be opened. However, this is not a concern for residential (one and two story, anyway) homes. In fact, house designs typically shoot for a recessed or covered (as in a portico) exterior door. The reason is to shield the opening from the elements. A door that opens to the outside would basically be going in the opposite direction--heading toward the elements.

An outswing door means you're trapped if it snows a lot, or if the idiot UPS guy leans a huge box against it. <--- this happened

Commercial work nearly always (99%?) has out-swinging doors.
Residential work has about 80% in-swinging door.

The first because of fire and egress issues.
The latter depending on weather & climate issues.

Residential door that opens "out"?
Sounds like someone ordered a door with the wrong "swing" -
rather than take it back and wait for the correct door - just, "throw it in"!
We do install passage-doors on garages that open out -
(not that often, though)
You'll have a very, "fun" time "kicking" those doors down!
