Price quote SHOCK!!!

We are getting prices on the following for our home.
2 doors in the family room (outside access)
1 sliding door in kitchen (5 foot)
1 small window next to sliding door.
estimates are coming in at 10k-13k
I was in shock when I got these prices, I knew windows and doors were expensive but thats way more than I figured (or budgeted)
They were Marvin clad, maintenence free exterior, stained wood interior.
Now I'm thinking about going to a box store for quotes, but the wife is fighting me on this, not sure what to do.

Are these new openings or are you just replacing what's there?
Last place I would be getting any quotes from is a box store!
Call some more contractors and get some more prices.

Just replacing what we have there now..

we are getting more $$$$
I did call menards and found out some interesting things
they contract independant companies, many of them are small local places, do to their installs. I called a few and actually had a nice conversation with a guy who lives near me, been in business for 30 years, he told me he would install any product I bought. he gave me some info on what he likes at menards, and what he doesn't. maybe a guy like this with little or no overhead may give me a better deal. he is coming over tonight. we will see.

Box stores do not have full time people on staff, there has to be a huge mark up on the price because there's more people looking for a piece of the pie.
I often see there quotes double what mine is.

Done......................suprised Mike has not chimed in yet, LOL

He's working, I'm goofing off trying to get out of working.

I agree with Joe, stay away from the box stores. Marvin is pricey so your quotes may not be out of line depending on options etc, but you may be able to do better. In Chicagoland, give Strong windows a call and talk to Dave. Great guy. He offers the best products and is pretty reasonably priced.

Thanks, I have to share this story since an ad came up at the top of this page for Renewal By Anderson....so this guy comes over last week, a rep from this company. he thought he was a smooth sales man. I bet he sells a ton of windows, however he didn't know I'm the top sales man in my company, I dont know crap about home stuff but I do know sales. anyway, he puts on his show. and says he will email and call with his quote. the next day, the pressure is on, he wants me to committ to his deal and can only secure the price he gave me for 24hours, (who does he think I am the dufus of the year. ???) anyway, his quote was not detailed enough, too many loop holes, price was really high, and his selling point was he sold an Anderson series that NO BODY else had, and was better then any other window on the market, needless to say, he is out of the bid process LOL

Not a fan of high-pressure sales regardless of the company....

Replaced this last week. 9 years old, not covered under warranty.

Worked for an Andersen distrib./installer -
(Not bad windows and doors)
$1000+ per pane - we saw the contracts.
Maybe a little steep!?!
10 ft., 4 section sliding door - (2) 48" X 48" windows -
$13,000 plus!
Hope that was enough?!?

joecaption 04-18-2013 01:14 PM

I've replaced a ton of Anderson and Pella clad windows.
All of them had a rotted out bottom sash.
Of the dozens I've replace the factory says they have never heard of the problum.
If you check out a web site called Pis*ed off Consumer (you fill in the blanks) there's hundreds of pretty upset people with warrenty issues that the companys refuses to follow up on.

HomeSealed 04-18-2013 01:23 PM

That pic is not a clad product, it is the composite.

rossfingal 04-18-2013 01:47 PM

I don't know if I've replaced "tons" of windows and/or doors -
(I didn't weigh them all)

Most of the problems were -
improper, installation.
A decent window/door is probably going to have a better useful life -
than a "high-end" product, installed incorrectly.
