Pocket doors
I want to replace my laundry door with a pocket door to make it more accessible. Do I have to remove the existing dry wall?

And some studs.
You need a 6' opening for a 3' door. You sheetrock after the door is installed. Sent from a Samsung Galaxy S2 Last edited by titanoman; 01-08-2012 at 10:56 AM. |

Is it a load-bearing wall?

You need to reframe the wall with a header large enough for the entire pocket door frame---
Also a good idea to fill in the spaces between the 1x4 furring strips with 3/4" plywood---adds some stiffness to the wall and makes the drywalling easier--

Pocket doors
Pocket doors are a pain. They are usually flimsy and if they come off the track after the install is done, their a pain to get back on. Don't slam them!
With that being said, follow the directions above, and be careful when you install and adjust the door. And when you put the base back on, use adhesive or short nails. |

There are some that slide on an exposted track that gets face mounted to the outside wall.
You will still loose some wall space. |

Keep in mind that pocket doors hardly stop any sound.......

Dick read the instructions with your kit. Usually for me it has been 2 times the door plus 1 inch.

Also make sure your drywall screws don't go right through their thin studs and scratch the door. |

Pocket doors
My issue is this:
We bought this house a guy tried to build his self. The laundry room has a door to go outside and door to enter the living room. The doors open into each other which presents an issue because with the washer and dryer it doesn't leave much space to go in and out. I thought since the wall isn't a bearing wall we could put a pocket door in to save space. Sounds complicated! Any ideas or advice on what to do? |
