Other options for window install/block

I'm doing a remodel and am in the process of adding a window to one of my basement wells. If you look closely, you can se where the window used to exist - added mortar.

It seems, the previous owner blocked in the window and install the door to the left. I want to add light.

The black line on the wall is one side of the existing window.

This is my question. If I knock out the block where the window used to be, there will be a 2 foot wide by 4 foot tall opening. Knowing this, can I somehow install a new vinyl window in that opening WITHOUT putting in wood?

If I put in wood for the window attach to, then I would have to buy a much narrower window rather than a 2X4 window.
