So I built this wall to turn my carport into a garage. I decided early on that I wanted a one piece tilt door. There are a few advantages to the tilt door besides the rock'in good looks. Head room is one, noise another, and if my projects happen on a rainy day, I have some additional covered area outside my garage for my motorcycles.
According to the local experts, they are not popular here, but can be shipped from Florida at great expense. It seems the best way to do it is to build it custom on site. I have carpentry and cabinetry skills, so I thought I would tackle this job. My father-in-law has all the tools for this I might need. And some skills i likely don't have.
However, I can't find any info or plans on what I need to take into consideration in my design. How thick should it be for it's size? (8'6" tall x 9') how much room does it need on the sides, top and bottom? how much room does it need for hardware?
All I can find is link after link of springs and hinges.
I was thinking of using marine grade ply wood panels and planks for the frame, then use marine varnish as a finish. What should I use for the frame to hold the plywood panels? 1x? 2x? Does it need the diagonal piece (inside)? how should I join the frame seams?
There are probably a few more questions I should ask, but I would appreciate help on these.
