old aluminum window - replace brittle sealing gaskets
The lower level (half-basement) of our house has seven 3'h x 6'w windows, original to the house (1967). Getting the windows replaced will not be cheap and we cannot afford to do that anytime soon.
Since we have to make do with these windows, I would appreciate some advice on repairs.
I've attached a photo of one window showing the white seal (gasketing?) between the glass and aluminum that has become brittle and is falling off. This is the same situation for all the windows. I've looked for replacement gasketing with no luck. Is it called by another name? If this kind of sealing gasket is no longer being made, what can I use instead?
Alternately could I reseal the glass/aluminum seams with caulk or is that a dumb idea?
