naming windows

I'm getting ready to put an order in for replacement windows and just so that I don't sound like a complete idiot, I need some clarification on how to name them correctly.
For example: for the sliders, when standing in the room looking at the window if the sliding portion slides to the right is it a 'right hand' window?

How would you name the casements? Right swing, left swing?

Also, does the width always come before the height when referencing the rough opening?

Normally it is width then height.

Casements are normally hinged right or hinged left.

Sliders are sometimes 2-Lite meaning then both move but you will need to indicate what is the preferred operable panel.

Whether you indicate from inside looking out or outside looking in depends on your situation.

You will also need to figure out if the sizes are make sizes or if they do an automatic cut back.

If you are ordering these in person, make a simple list of your windows with a little diagram next to each one. Mark it with which ever way you are viewing, i.e 'looking from the inside', etc. Mark which side is the main opening side and draw an arrow to note direction of travel. Sounds stupid, but if you make a mistake ordering and get a window that's the reverse of what you want, you are stuck with it. You want the sales person to understand exactly what you want and that both of you are on the same page. When I order windows at a local supply house, I have to sign off on every order as it's written. If something is wrong after that, it's on me.

Where I’m from a slider is either an XO or a OX, the X is the sliding portion and the O is the fixed side.

This is always called out as you look at the window from the “outside”. So in your case with the sliding portion on the right looking at it from the inside would be an XO window.

If the window had a sliding portion on both sides with a fixed panel in the middle it would be an XOX.

As far as measurements there is a box to check on the order sheet, either RO (rough opening) or (net frame). If you order RO the windows will come ½” smaller than the measurements that you gave. If you order “net frame” then the measurements that you gave is exactly what you get.

I would just point out, like I stated before, some manufacturers are still inside looking out.

Just double check with whomever you choose.

That's interesting, twenty something years of ordering windows (on the left coast) and it's always been from the outside looking in.

Now that I live in the middle I'll be paying attention to that detail.

You are about 99.99% right on most of them.

There are a couple that are still a bit backwards.

Makes for a costly mistake on shape windows if you aren't careful.

chongololo, since you didn't want to "sound like a complete idiot" when ordering don't say you are 'naming' them, you are 'specing' (for specifying but that can sound a little high falutin or like you are just out pricing or looking for bids due to relation to speculation) best is " calling out" or just caliing, I think kwik was the one used that. Sounds like you're a guy that doesn't fool around with high toned nomemclature and really knows how to put them windows in. Calling out goes back to when the foreman knew how to read and write and cypher. He'd set up somewhere central with pencil and paper, or charcoal and a shingle, and workers would walk around counting and measuring and such. From cottonfields to bridge building, it was calling out.
