nail flange on new patio door
Is is ok to cut the nail flange off the new replacement sliding glass patio door?

Not usually, it's how it fastens to the wall.
How do you plan on attaching it?

What type siding do you have?
In most cases what's what holds it in place, keeps air and water out, once you apply the sealing tape over it.

yes you can cut off the nailing flange. but ONLY if the door has hurricane straps and if you use shims and screws to fasten it to the framing

the only thing is its not as easy to seal the door to prevent leaks.. you can create a flashing flange using this product

If you are doing it via pocket/insert replacement and not pulling off the siding, brick, etc, you can put it in as pocket style door.

Pay special attention to the flashing and moisture management detailing as mentioned above.

Can you post up a picture?

I agree, if you absolutely need too... score both sides of the flange with a utility knife and bend it back-and-forth a few times.

As posted already------------------ before you cut it off----------- a picture of the application would help.

+1 to WoW's post. In fact, many doors don't even come with a flange. Be aware however, that this can make the flashing (aka: weatherproofing) of the unit a little bit more complicated and less DIY friendly, as custom bent metal is usually required.
