Hi - I have a Baldwin front door lock. A single key from the outside unlocks the deadbolt and the latch lock. The mortise lock is a cylinder. Problem is that the key will turn and unlock the deadbolt but then won't turn much further unlock the latch. Any idea if this is a bad key, bad mortise, bad overall lock in general etc? Hopefully there is a simple fix and I don't need a locksmith to come out. The Baldwin is prob 25 years old.
Could be a loose/broken fitting inside the mortise box. Couldn't hurt to take it apart, if only to lube it up after 25 years. Baldwin is very good replacing parts. I had a customer who broke a flange inside the lock mortise holding the thumb latch in place. Baldwin sent out the parts at no charge after 10 years.
Try lubing the lock mechanism as well before you pull it apart.
