integrated J channel option

Is having a new construction window with integrated J channel a good thing if you are using hardy plank or cedar shake siding? Also I am using a geometric window (circle top). Aesthetically would a window without the J channel and having the siding butt up to a casing be better.

Does the J channel help out if the window is properlty installed?

you can use integrated j but you need to follow these details with hardie

wood shakes? hmmm... maybe i wouldn't,what do you say Ron?

the other concern would be the width of the pocket and the thickness of the installed siding

the other thing you may want to consider is future window replacement, independent window trim will make replacement much easier

As Tom's link shows, it can be done, but it would not be my choice. They still call for additional flashing on the top and bottom so it would seem like a waste to me... and probably look kinda weird. I prefer the look and functionality of separate trim around the window.
