Installing Nail-Fin window on brick home

Hi,

I bought a cheap Jeldwel low-e window for my kitchen for $100. It's all I can afford right now.

My current window in the kitchen has rotted wood and passes through a huge breeze. I needs to be thrown out as well as the frame around the window. I just wanted to put something in until the economy gets better. Something I can live with for a few years.

The window measures 36w x 36h (not including the fin)..

The window opening from brick to brick is 38w x 34h

I don't mind cutting out some brick to make it fit. Maybe I can take some pics during the install.

How would you guys recommend I install the window?

First thing would be to not install the window.

Why would you install a window that is 2" too narrow and 2" too tall (requiring brick removal)?

Return the window and take that $100 back and apply towards a properly sized window. The few extra bucks it will cost will easily be regained by the lack of additional labor (and mess) to install it.

Your time, even in a DIY capacity, is worth money.

yeah. take that window back. and have them order a "correct" size window for you. it will only cost about $15 more = WAY worth the extra cost.

I actually bought the window on clearance and can't return it. They didn't have a size that fit the window.

I know that you guys don't recommend it, but I have the time and tools don't mind doing whatever to the window opening. Maybe it will be fun and I can take some pics to show progress.

The window sill is bricks turned sideways.

does the rest of the house have those brick sills ? are the other windows the same size ? what other windows are on this side of the house ?

We all do this for a living and will not make a dime by suggesting to order the right sized window.
It's going to be way more work then you think to get a water tite seal and have the brick work come out looking right.
Even if someone gave me the window for free, and I have all the tools and know how, I would not install it like that.
Vinyl windows are almost always special ordered, made to size, The ones you see at the box stores are for new constrution so you can frame the opening to size.

You must be as high as a kite to think about cutting/removing brick to fit a window.

Next thing, you'll want to cut your car in 12 pieces so you can park it in the basement.

I agree with everyone here. It's $100, sell the window on CraigsList and buy the PROPERLY SIZED window. You can probably get your $100 back on CraigsList and then order and buy the correct sized.

What you are attempting is plain wrong and counter productive. It will cost you more $$ and give you more problems if you try and rig that window in. It will leak and give you problems.

Ok well you guys are going to make me have to do it on my own then. Im tired of the bugs flying in at night.

I'll upload some pics anyways and just fumble my way through the install..

Strange on how people post a question looking for advice. Everyone that chimes in tells them that it will cost them more $$, it will cause problems, it will create more work, it's completely wrong, and yet they disregard the advice and do it anyways.
