Install a "prehung" door sans door?

I put in my first prehung door last year and frankly, it was a *****. Im tasked with installing another exterior door and this time it seems easier to just take the door off its hinges and mount the frame only. Seems easier to plumb it up. Do people do this with prehungs? Kosher? Just wondering

Nope, never!!
First thing you'll find is the knob will not line up with the latch doing it that way.
If your having that much trouble then your doing something wrong.
A lot of it is in the prep work. The rough opening needs to be square and plumb, the floor area needs to be checked for level, if it's off it's going to throw the whole door install off.

The problem with the last one (Masonite from Home Depot) was quality control was terrible; it just wasn't put together well. The hinges weren't fit correctly. This time its a JeldWen which probably isn't much better

hanging a exterior door solo is tricky because its near impossilbe ot keep the door tight to the wall while shimming without the door falling out of hte opening
