I want a new attic entry door

I currently have a tiny attic entry that's a pita to squeeze through. I'm starting to get sick of it. I've been wondering about the consequences of enlarging the opening. I know that there's a variety of folding ladders that can be installed as a part of the attic access. One contractor I know told me that I could cut a larger opening because the joists are only holding the drywall up there. I'm thinking about doing it. Has anyone ever installed a new attic door? Any tips from experience?
