How to Open a Door?

Our back exterior door has a problem with the doorknob/lock.
The know will turn, but it does not engage the lock, and the door, of course, won't open.
We took of the know & tried playing around with the innards of the lock, but nada.
It's been like this for a while. Now, we're getting a new dishwasher, and it will have to get in through that door.
So (yay!) we have serious motivation to stop our procrastination.
Please, I need some good ideas.
If you need a pic, let me know.
Thanks in advance!

How to Open a Door?

Remove the whole knob and use a flat screw driver inside the hole to slide the latch over to release it.

Remove the pins from the hinges, pull it out from the hinge side. Then replace the opening mechanism.

The old trick about using a credit card actually works surprisingly well on a number of knobs. Don't use one you would want to break, but it's stupid easy to pop open a door that way.
