how to fix hole in porch door jamb?

Hi all,

A very hasty patch job was done on this door a couple of years ago, right before we closed on this house, and now it has either gone bad or maybe wasn't done completely in the first place. There is a 2 inch tall, half inch. Wide and maybe 3/4 inch deep hole behind the plastic seal, and a 2 x 3 in area of water discoloration.

Can we just cut out the bad area and replace it? Do we have to replace the whole jamb piece? Should we just fill the hole with something? Its not that noticeable being way down towards the floor.

It might be some kind of bugs but we haven't seen any other bug issues anywhere in the house.

Thanks very much for any advice!

Looks like termites to me. I see mud tunnels, etc. Have a bug guy check it out.

The damage is not too hard to fix if you are a fair DIY'er. If it turns out to be termites, you may want to pull the door and frame to check for other structure damage.

I'm not sure about termites---I think the door is leaking ----

That piece of wood is called a jamb extender---

Remove the casing (fancy trim by the drywall)

Remove the jamb extender---make a new one using clear pine--a table saw helps a lot --

If you have a Multi-tool it is possible to cut out the bad wood only and put in a patch--but that looks like a patch---not the best idea.

This will let you examine the stud behind the trim---I think you are going to find you have to fix the leaking door and the wood damage from the door.

I would remove that casing and get a better look at the guts.

You can certainly use one of the foamed PVC boards to stitch it in with a multi tool, however, you are going to need to paint that door afterwards to make it look seamless.

Okay, we took off the casing, you can't see the stud behind the drywall but you can see that there is water damage to the bottom of the jamb extender which is no surprise. Also the subfloor. Since it appears that that piece goes all the way across the door jamb, we can't take it off without removing all the door stuff on top of it. But I guess I'm convinced now that the whole piece needs to be replaced. Probably will hire a door guy to do it though.
