Hinges are on the outside. Burglars welcome

Thanks in advance for your help.

In my new home construction, 2 doors to the outside (on the ground floor) have their hinges on the outside.

Drift punch the pins out, and you can make yourself welcome indoors.

The house about 6 to 8 weeks from completion.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Garrett

Hi Garrett, check to make sure the hinges are security type.
If so they will have a set screw on each one that you can access and see when you open the doors.

Andy.

As a default, if it is an exterior door, they should be.

For anyone with pre-security hinges, drill a small hole in the hinge-side door edge, 1/2" deep to accept the head and shank (3/8") showing of a 10d casing nail---nailed in the jamb opposite it. Drive the nail first, slowly close the door partially to mark location for hole. One at all hinges, pulling the pin won't remove the door, unless determined. Remember, locks are for honest people......

I did the same thing as GBR. Except, I used 1/4' lag screws, left 1/2-3/4" protruding, then cut the heads off with a hacksaw. I used 2, midway between the hinges.

Even better. Drill the lags into the hinge plates themselves. Then it's a metal to metal connection. Just be sure the lags reach back into the stud. Locks may be for honest people, but burglars are not fond of making all the noise and bother it takes to overcome good ones.
Or replace the hinges with non-removable pin type.

I like Maintenance6's idea even better. When I posted, I'd forgotten that my lag bolts were matching up with holes in a metal door frame.
