Fire rated doors
 

Couple days ago it was on tv some guys who improve reg doors to fire rated doors. Is there anybody who knows to explain how to do it. thx in Advance.

You remove the old door and jambs and install a door that is fire rated. The rating comes in steps, from 20 min to 2 hrs. The first will be solid core wood doors and frames, the latter will be steel door and frames.

There used to be a practice of nailing a piece of sheet metal to the garage side of the door and that made it a fire door. I don't think that flies anymore.

Just Bill is right---A UL fire rating tag must be on the door or it will not pass inspection.

The frame is part of the fire rating---retrofitting an existing door will not pass.
