Exterior Door - rough opening Question

i have a pre-hung steel door that needs replacing. The rough opening is 31.5 inches and the jamb in the old door has no play for shiming. This is a exterior door. what size door do i need. it is not the standard 2 inches bigger then door opening

Sounds like you have a 30" door that someone framed a little small, you should have a 32" ro.
Measure the actual width of the door to make sure it is 30"

If you need to make the ro a little wider, remove existing door, jamb and casings. Take a sawzall and cut through the nails in the drywall that are connected to the ro.

Beat the ro with a hammer until you reach your desired ro size.
Make sure to plumb the ro and nail into place.

You do not need to remove the framing nails in the ro, they will help as you are beating out the ro.

I/m sorry but that is not the best advice... knocking on the RO,you could knock the jack stud from beneath the header and what is to hold the header.. best to remove drywall and consider all wall loads and structure before moving anything.

If the door opening is good and plumb / level then a tight size will still allow the door to fit, just tightly. having play between the RO and door frame is ideal though.

I understand what you are saying, but he only needs a 1/4 " on each side, that should not be a problem.

That being said, my advice should have warned him about that possibility.
