Double or Triple Pane - worth it?

I am deciding between double pane windows from a company Mitten - their Grand River vinyl double pane windows for $8000

vs Triple pane windows from a company that locally makes the windows in house, and have an excellent reputation for $12,000.

House build in 70's, bungalo style.

Some say this, some say that, sure I'd like triple pane...but $4000 bucks is a lot of money.

Some say double will fog or have moisture, others say triples will be heavy - especially the big picture window and my 2x4 house wasn't built for that weight.

Like anything...what is the best info to trust???

I live in Canada...

Both style windows can fog up if the seal is broken.
Weight should not be a factor.
2 X 4's are strong enough to hold up a whole roof system, why would they not be strong enough to hold up a simple window?
Are these replacement widows, or new constrution?

+1 to joe's advice.

A failed window will fog regardless of double pane or triple pane.

There is no difference in the weight ability to support a window.

In Canada, triple pane is likely a more recommended given the temperature extremes. I am not sure that $4,000 is an accurate upgrade fee in most cases.

Those prices are extreamly high unless that also includes wraping the window frames with coil stock.
I'd be calling around and getting some more prices.
You do know installing replacement windows is DIY 101, right?
The wraping should only be done by a pro.

Did he mention how many units he had?

Just wondering. Maybe I missed it.

From seeing your other posts, I hope you are going with new construction windows.

How long are you going to be using these windows? How long will they last? Take that figure, and see how much money you may save over that many years in energy costs. Does it add up to more than the difference in price? I doubt it.

How many windows do you have? Must be quite a few windows to add up that high.

Anyone who says a double pane window will fog up before a triple pane has got A LOT to learn about how a building works.

My guess is that it is condensation they are talking about, not a broken seal.

Kitchen and bedroom window reg size = 5 windows
1 small bathroom window
1 Big Living Room window

I don't know what goes into a window that makes them so expensive...but I'll shop around a bit more...I thought the prices were high too...although that is an installed price...I think labor is over a grand.

I've got to be miss reading your post 7, windows to $8000.00.
That sounds way to high unless there's some really special windows or a whole lot more labor involved we do not know about.

$8000 is the installed price, so is the $12000 for the triple pane

Most people around here say that is about right...I will be getting more quotes though

Most windows are priced by united inches. Without seeing your house or the windows its hard to say if that price is high or not. Also you're not really comparing apples to apple using two different manufacturers.
