Double pane windows

Is it possible for a double pane window to shatter if the seal breaks? This happened to us about 2:30am. No extreme weather changes. No visible sign of damage on outside pane; however inside pane shattered. Not sure if we should suspect vandalism.

extremely unlikely, double pane windows are much harder to break than single pane.

The inside shattered but the outside was fine? Seems like probably not vandalism

Do you notice any bowing or distortion of the glass prior to this?... So it shattered not cracked? Definitely does not sound like vandalism if the outer pane shows no damage.

+1

Inner pane is probably as a result of a defect, thermal shock, etc.

That or a cat with a sore forehead and some slightly scared birds.

agreed!

There are a number of reasons that your interior lite could break. Seal failure would not be one of those causes, however was there a reason to suspect that your window had seal failure?

Also, you used the word "shattered". Was the glass tempered - meaning did it shatter into all sorts of pebble size bits?

And, like HomeSealed asked, did you notice any bowing or distortion in the glass prior to it breaking? If you have other windows of similar size/shape take a look for distortion or bowing in the glass. Use a straight edge across the glass if there appears to be a problem.

How big are these windows and what style (double hung, casement, "crank-out", etc)?
