Details on installng patio door

When installing a patio door, is it necessary to place screws in the corners of the frame where the shims are wedged or are the screws in the nail fin all that are necessary to hold the door stable and plumb.

There are no long screws included for this purpose and no mention of this is made in the instructions. I placed them on a previous installation and here are photos.

A second question: the wall isn't perfectly flat so If I position the patio door frame vertical on both sides, the nail fin on a lower corner will sit 1/2 inch off the stud. Does it make much difference if I screw that area of the nail fin flat against the wood, or should I use spacers there under the nail fin?

Thanks for any input.

Before all that, did you install a sill pan or at least flash around the bottom of the area where the door sits? I see where it looks like someone messed up and install the deck to high so there's sure to be splash back that can come in under the threshold and take out the subflooring and more.

When I installed my patio door, (a Marvin), the door came with detailed instructions regarding allowable screw types, sequence of installation, flashing, caulking, squaring the door, installation of the threshold etc. Presumably your door came with instructions, unless perhaps you got the door on Ebay or second hand. If you did get the door second hand, you should call the manufacturer or get on their website and find the installation instructions, and follow them.

I second the comment about flashing, a patio door is subject to harsh conditions, and improper flashing is likely to be a big problem down the road.

Its a new Simonton vinyl slider, but it only came with boilerplate instructions that seemed to apply to their entire product line. For guys that install these patio doors routinely, I was just wondering if they placed those screws mentioned.

The lower opening for the new slider has been well flashed. If I had it to do over, I would have made the deck level an inch lower, but it is not critical since we don't get snow and it sits under a 3-5 foot cantilever.

The Jel-wen slider in the photo is at a different location and will not be replaced for now. It was only to illustrate the screws I was talking about.

Thank you for the input.
