Deadbolt suddenly stopped working

Hello,

I just went to lock my deadbolt from the outside using the key and found that the key was just turning freely without locking the door. The lever on the inside continues to work fine to lock and unlock the door. I also tested it in the locked position and had the same result: key spins but does not unlock it. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks!

Most likely the locking leaver broke off---if the lock was loose in the door it could have just popped out of the slot.

Remove the lock--two screws inside on the flipper cover---check and see what's broken--

Dead bolts are inexpensive---and can be re-keyed to match what you have---many stores that sell locks can re-key it for about $7.00---

+1

Depending on the lock, you can remove the cylinder and swap it out in some cases as well.
