Changing out slabs

Alright my wife wants new doors throughout the house. The current doors have two hinges and the hinges are square corners. So the question is is it easier to replace the door and jamb or rework the current jambs and new doors?

Are the doors solid or hollow core?
If you just replace the "slab" -
you don't have to replace the jambs and trim.
You should, probably get a very, sharp chisel -
to cut in the hinges on the new "slabs".

Hollow core

Since your having to ask this question, my guess is you have never done this before.
Far faster and easier to install a prehung door then to try and make a bare slab fit an old opening in most cases.

I replaced the slabs in a few of my doorways. It seemed like it would be far easier than trying to get all the craftsman style trim off without damaging it or the plaster. Cheaper too. Turned out to be much more complicated then I imagined. Our home was built in the early years of the depression so plumb and square frames where no longer either.

It took meticulous effort to get the new slabs trimmed just right to get the uniform fit all around the sides and top. Then I shimmed it into place and marked the hinge locations. Sacrificed an old screw driver to fabricate a scribe that was the right size to reach in the small gap at the hinge locations and transfer the top, bottom and back to the slab. Once the door was hanging by the hinges I could then get a dead on location for where to drill the holes for the handle and latch.

If you are patient and take your time it turns out well but man is it ever a lot of fussing around.
