Champion windows issue

Metal framed windows and I don't know the name of the part. Specifically went to open the window and heard twang!

Left and right side metal lift assisters both disconnected and sprung, so to speak.

So are these broken or do they just need to be wound back up and attached? If yes which way and how to adjust?

Thanks

Spring balances; and if you heard a twang one of them probably broke. Inside there is a spring which never breaks, nylon cord, a little block and tackle pulley, and a rivet holding one end of the spring, all of which can break. They generally can't be fixed, but several companies sell replacement spring balances. Google 'champion window parts'.

On the other hand if the spring balance has popped up above the moving sash, the cam that is attached to the sash may have broken. The twang tends to point to the spring balance.

Are they spiral, constant force, side load, or block and tackle.

Something broke to be certain but what depends on which system.

Post up a picture.

Spiral in their own round tube. Green Tip with a hook.

Most spiral balances will break in either the balance tube or the clutch/shoe assembly.

Check where the pivot pin mounts to the window and look for broken plastic.

Thanks, just got 4 new balances. Do these go straight in without any adjustments?

They need to be coiled and pre-tensioned.

Buy the little tool. It will save you heartache.
